Dr. Carolyn Smith has been Associate Professor at the School of Social Welfare, University at Albany, State University of New York since 1997. She was assistant professor at the same institution, 1990–1997. Previously, Dr. Smith was a social work consultant with Project Strive in Albany, New York, on delinquency and substance abuse prevention and family intervention, 1987–1988. She was unit director of Project Hope in Albany, working in delinquency prevention and family intervention, from 1981–1984. As a social worker, Dr. Smith addressed the needs of troubled youth and families, 1969–1980. She served as co-principal investigator for a number of studies, including OJJDP's Continuation of the Rochester Youth Development Study, 1995–1996, which examined the causes and correlates of serious delinquency and drug use. She was also co-principal investigator for OJJDP's Explaining Serious, Chronic, and Violent Delinquency, 1996–1999. Dr. Smith is currently co-principal investigator for the National Institute of Mental Health's Intergenerational Transmission of Antisocial Behavior, 1998–2003. She has published numerous articles on the relationship between family background, family processes, and the behavioral problems of youth. Dr. Smith received a B.A. in sociology from London School of Economics, a Master's in social work from University of Michigan, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in criminal justice from University at Albany, State University of New York.
