Percy Wootton, M.D., a private practitioner of internal medicine with a subspecialty in cardiology, became president of the American Medical Association (AMA) in June 1997. Dr. Wootton, who was president-elect of AMA in June 1996, has served as a member of the AMA Board of Trustees since 1991. In addition to his service to AMA, Dr. Wootton is a clinical professor of medicine at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University, a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. An active participant in organized medicine, Dr. Wootton has presided as president of the Richmond Academy of Medicine, the Medical Society of Virginia, the Richmond Area Heart Association, and the Virginia Heart Association. In 1996, he received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Wootton earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
